There are just too many things going on at the moment that I think its time to just sit down and reflect on things.

My job is going superb and it is the reason that has kept me going. I would like to hopefully take a few weeks out and just think about things and where I want to go in life. Maybe its just luck thats turning towards me and welcomed with open arms.

Last weekend, I won the Emirates Amateur Ladies Open! Totally did not expect it after scoring a less than impressive score on the first day. I went out on the second, expecting to secure the second place that is up for grabs.

Turns out, the leader of the first day, a good friend of mine as well didn't play her usual consistent golf and gave me the opportunity to go for the title in a sudden death playoff.

I must have played one of my best golf on that particular sudden death playoff hole.

It was played on the 9th Majlis - which is never a 'birdie' hole when the wind is up and against us. So I played it safe and end up putting a 15 foot par putt for the win. What a moment that was!

My drives were fairly consistent on both days but what kept me in the hunt was mainly my short game. Though, there were a couple of holes where my putter failed me miserably but overall, it was my short game that saved my shots. My approach shots were almost downright atrocious!

An article and photo came up in the local paper today about my win. LOL. The photo had a caption that said 'Green Machine'. LOL. My first win in Dubai! Hurrah!

I am happy to go away with the win, knowing that I got it even without scoring well (on my open standards).

Just a week before, I managed to scramble a team of ladies and we won 2nd place in a team stableford competition. The great thing about that event though, was that we won a considerable sum of money vouchers from a travel agent.

The only thing that I got from winning the Emirates Amateur (considered one of the best ladies amateur events) is a nice-crystal-expensive-looking trophy. Oh- and the publicity that goes with it. LOL.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R8xYDO--dII/AAAAAAAAAJU/8O6Bn6XUB5c/s320/emirates+open+trophy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173606884526945410" />

News and Updates

Written by Fiz

It has been a long while since the last update. Basically I could not be bothered to update and Daniel needs a kick in the bum to do any updates here.

On the job front - I will be the new proshop manager for Ernie Els Golf Course! I am excited about this job and welcome the new challenges. The salary and overall package is much better as well and most of all - I will be heading back to a golf course. Ah. Perfect. Just the way I want it.

So looks like I'm back in the golf industry! I guess because the pay is so much better now, I have no reason to look in any other industries. Thank goodness too, deep down, I knew I cannot leave this pathetic game without a bloody great reason.

This new course and everything about it has got me really excited. The Els Club will be one of the main features of a new community call Dubai Sports City. The whole concept of Sports City is enticing to any sports lover or anyone passionate about their sports. Link - www.dubaisportscity.ae

I've got a new reason to stay longer in Dubai. Which sometimes, still annoys me. Dubai has its ways of kicking you hard in the ass if you're not on your guard. Honesty and customer service does not bode well with the people of Dubai. And bloody courtesy on the roads!!

This new change of jobs also means that there is a slim chance of me heading back to Perth for holidays - which sucks majorly. I get depressed at the thought of not being able to go back untill next year's summer. Argh.

Ah, happy days.

Daniel is still working hard as well. Shortage of staff also means he's picking up even more hours. He's doing fine though apart from being tired most of the time. Guess it doesn't help that we have Timmy (one of our kittens) who is a bloody menace in the morning. Making a ruckus to wake anyone up. Serves Dan right for wanting kittens.

Sigh.

No matter how exciting Dubai can be, it cannot and never will be home for me. I still miss Perth a lot.

Fresh Start

Written by Fiz

Today, I decided once and for all that I am going to give up on my dream of working in the golf industry in Dubai. It was a very hard decision to make considering how much I love working in this industry but let's face it - I cannot go to work anymore knowing that I am being screwed moneywise. (plus Im sick of hearing false promises and false words from my employers regarding increments or bonuses).

Its a great industry to work in but my gawd - it is one of the worst paying industry in Dubai! Enthusiasm and passion for this game can only last me so far. I refuse to be one of my other colleagues who have grown bitter about their job, their passion for golf and their love for this game. True story. Ive seen at least 4 colleagues in this industry, who are terrific golf players but gave up on the game and grew bitter about it. (you should see one of them swing, omg, its a bloody beauty).

Although I rather go back to a golf job in Perth - I have decided to stay on in Dubai because Daniel wants to stay on. So I'll stay.

If I get a better paying job, at least I can still play my golf. At the moment, the thought of entering any tournaments or social games that cost money actually puts me off!

So the field is open!! Im thinking of sticking to sales and customer service, which I know I am good at - and maybe have a hand at hospitality?! tourism?! leisure?!

Now if only I have the inspiration to write a fantastic cover letter. So far, my drafts sound lame. LOL. Or is that an indication that I am not ready to leave the game that I love?

Just about had enough

Written by Fiz

I didnt want to completely annoy Daniel of my whinging so I thought I'll let out my frustations here. (I think I drove him mad enough with my whinging lately). Today has to be the top of the tops. I was calming down a bit with my Dubai frustations after that faboulous trip from Al Ain. But yesterday, all the roads were closed because of bloody Bush's presence in Dubai. I can't believe they closed all the main roads esp Sheikh Zayed Road just so his convoy can pass through. And Im not talking about closing the roads for a few hours - it was closed from 6am-4pm!!

They declared Dubai a public holiday due to all the main road closures. I should be cheering that I had a holiday but I know my work gets backlogged and others that I deal with will use this as an excuse! A deadline is still a deadline unless you are in Dubai.

It has been raining for the last few days. What a sight of relief it was to start with but now it has turned to an absolute nightmare. Who the f*** builds and plans the roads on Dubai?! There are no proper drainage systems, so this morning, after a straight 20 hours of rain (light to mid heavy)- all the bloody roads are flooded! Traffic was the worst Ive ever seen in ages and more so - its the drivers with their stupidity that amazed me the most! Why on earth would you drive 80+ on a road that is covered with puddles?

It took me 2 hours to get to work today - got in for a staff training at a retail store, late due to the traffic and the staff was not even there. They were also stuck in the traffic. Fine. Can't help things like that. Took a turn to my office - voila- my office is flooded! There are water leaking from the roof all the way down to my desk, floor and my computer is absolutely soaked! There is no electricity whatsoever so there is absolutely nothing that I could do. I asked the office staff whether this had happened before - and they all say every year! Why didn't anyone fix the roof if this happens every year?

"Cutting cost ma'am".

Ergh.

I hear that many buildings here have leaks and floods on the roads all due to poor construction standards. *gasp*. No surprise there. But could someone not do something to fix it?!

To top the matter worst - took me another hour and a half to get home and on the way back - this taxi driver actually fast-drove through HUGE PUDDLES on the right lane and temporarily blinded my car with his splashing for at least 5 seconds on a MAIN ROAD! Thank god the car behind me didnt bump my car as I had to stop my car dead for those 5 seconds! And thank goodness I did that, cause the taxi driver actually had the nerve to cut ahead of me and if I had not stop my car, I would have bump into him!

I gave him a fearful display of lights flashing and horns blaring. I was so steep in anger that I didnt even think to write his number plates down. Damn!

Edited- Just check the newspapers, there were 500 recorded accidents before 10am today. OMG. 500?!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R4zN3N6zxmI/AAAAAAAAAI8/I0ybcyZRnSM/s320/15_weather_dubai6_5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155722021945198178" />

I HAD ENOUGH! This is the idiocracy of Dubai that I have to face day after day. I really dont know how much of this I can take. Before, frustations of Dubai was a crawling sensation on my skin, now it is steep in my nerves.

Wedding Anniversary trip to Al Ain

Written by Fiz

We had one of the nicest time in Al Ain for our first wedding anniversary. Man, how time flies. Al Ain is a town that is part of Abu Dhabi. This place comes highly recommended from many and after the trip, I can see why. We stayed at a hotel on top of a mountain call Jebel Hafeet. Its got an awesome view of Al Ain below and the landscape around that area is simply breathtaking.

We spend the whole weekend just lazing around and the weather was very cool and chilly. After spending 10 months in heat, this is a welcome turn of weather. There is a man made park below the mountain (called Green Mubazzarah)where tons of locals and tourists go for a picnic or camp. Ooo - and I also had my first hand try at shisha and manage to smoke it all the way through. Its quite an experience, very relaxing though I did feel a bit light headed after. You guys have to try Shisha if you are even in Middle East. We smoked the shisha inside this Arabian tent overlooking the valley below. All I can say is Wow.

Ref- Shisha is a water-pipe used for smoking tobacco in different flavours. So far Ive tried double-apple and grape. Very nice.

It is obviously a nice turn of events since we are so used to seeing flat sandy desert everywhere we go. Apart from Al Ain, only Fujairah and Hatta have high landscape of hills and mountains.

Funny enough, the whole time we drove up that mountain and seeing the hotel and a palace on top of that mountain, I keep thinking about the poorly paid labourers that had to suffer to build all that. I am sure that records of death and injuries for that particular project must be hidden and away from public knowledge.

Here are some pictures:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R4xzGd6zxhI/AAAAAAAAAIU/bNoC-vbrY1o/s320/Video+Cam+pictures+and+videos+189.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155622228380075538" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R4x03t6zxjI/AAAAAAAAAIk/T_Z9VUqpljE/s320/Video+Cam+pictures+and+videos+222.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155624174000260658" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R4xzz96zxiI/AAAAAAAAAIc/5elAOxI7QRY/s320/Video+Cam+pictures+and+videos+229.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155623010064123426" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R4x1j96zxkI/AAAAAAAAAIs/tyUhIG1LgzQ/s320/Video+Cam+pictures+and+videos+232.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155624934209472066" />

This is actually an indoor swimming pool! Since I last wrote - theres been so much going on. Daniel and I finally had a weekend away in Abu Dhabi, my mom came over during Eid and Christmas, watched the Dubai Ladies Masters through a VIP tent, went on my first much-talked Dubai dinner cruise along the Dubai Creek, had my first ever New Year's Eve party in Dubai and overall, still overwelmed by what really happened in 2007.

Weekend in Abu Dhabi

Daniel and I finally somehow manage to schedule a weekend away from Dubai (more like he finally took some time off work) and we head off to Abu Dhabi. Personally, from what Ive seen of Abu Dhabi, I'm kinda glad that I am in Dubai. Its nice and all, being the capital of UAE - but its probably not my cup of tea.

We stayed at Crowne Plaza, right in the heart of the city and it was a very nice hotel. We were over in Abu Dhabi as I had some demo days and he wanted to see a Jujitsu martial arts tournament.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R3-1ON6zxcI/AAAAAAAAAHs/L0VM9rcNm7E/s320/15122007364.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152035754594256322" />

The Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi Hotel had a rooftop pool bar. Awesome!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R3-1tN6zxdI/AAAAAAAAAH0/M0_r0Wqk_TU/s320/Image023.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152036287170201042" />

The Jujitsu tournament. It was the first time that Ive seen lots of Arabs in one place. Apparently, the locals here love martial arts and they came in numbers. Watching grown men hugging, touching and kissing each other is certainly something else.

Dubai Ladies Masters

As a fellow lady golfer and one who CHOOSE golf as her life career - Dubai Ladies Masters was so so much fun! It was great seeing the lady pros up close and even better that I had VIP access on the first day. There weren't a lot of spectators on all 4 days but that suit me fine. I hate big crowds.

Most of us were watching two main players. Laura Davies for her massive drives off the tee and Annika Sorenstam for the player that she is.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R3_J296zxeI/AAAAAAAAAH8/q2mIzYUBqI4/s320/laura.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152058444906481122" />

Laura Davies

Dubai Christmas Dinner Cruise with Daniel and Mom

On Christmas, we all took the much talked about must-do thing in Dubai which is the dinner cruise at the Creek. Lovely views and lovely weather to do so. It was a nice buffet dinner inside the boat and a full 360 view at the top. Love it. Its a shame I can't show you more pictures as my phone camera is not that good for night pictures.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R3_LuN6zxfI/AAAAAAAAAIE/knV5NPsOQ6w/s320/25122007404.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152060493605881330" />

The Dhow Boat that we cruised in

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R3_OX96zxgI/AAAAAAAAAIM/hZAjDw4rGsc/s320/me+and+mom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152063409888675330" />

Me and my mom in front of Burj Al Arab

It will be our one year wedding anniversary next week and our one year anniversary of being here in Dubai in three weeks time.

We did plan to be here in Dubai for like a year or two - and basicly, I'm all ready to head back to Perth. I miss Perth a lot. I miss the people and I miss the lifestyle. We will see how I go in the next few months with my job and how I desperately need a pay rise to keep up with the cost of living here. On the plus side, all the work experience that Ive gained in the last 6 months is totally invaluable and great to have.

Rugby 7s and Latest Updates

Written by Fiz

So much has been going on lately. I come home every day absolutely exhausted. Work is crazy. Even traffic seems to get worse and worse each day. Probably due to the mounting amount of tourists around the city. OMG. The tourists! Great for my retail golf business but hell for traffic problems.

Last week though, we went to the biggest event in Dubai - the Rugby 7s! Logistics and transport going back from that place is absolute hell but the event itself is great! Great atmosphere and a very entertaining crowd and DJ. Daniel and I got VIP Corporate tickets so we were really milking the experience. We vow to never return unless we have VIP tickets next year! LOL.

The corporate tickets were very nice as we get unlimited food and drinks. We even have an exclusive stands just for us.

I just joined Al Hamra Golf Club in RAK. Its great to go out there on the weekend. Its going to be a weekly thing for me to just get out of Dubai. I find myself less stressed everytime Im out of Dubai. The golf club itself is great as its not so packed with peeps and its got great facilities. Throughly enjoyable.

More pictures:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R1md76OSjXI/AAAAAAAAAHA/orCsRp_lTBM/s320/30112007326.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141314102187167090" />

Our corporate tent

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/R1meYKOSjYI/AAAAAAAAAHI/cOoKhcNkUOI/s320/30112007325.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141314587518471554" />

Inside the corporate tent. What a great experience it is to play on a sand course. Its very challenging but its still enjoyable.

Played rather well on both days and came in 2nd place! Lost the trophy by one shot. Which is a shame. But I'll take it anyway. It is tough playing on sand if you're not used to it so being able to finish second is quite cool.

But the best bit - is being able to meet all the ladies in the golf circuit. Theres a few good players out there so would be cool to see how we all pan out through the season.

Overall - great golfing experience and great networking opportunity.

Happy Days

Written by Fiz

I was just looking back at the times - it has been one heck of an adventure so far! With Dubai, my love and hate for it varies so much and Daniel can attest to this fact more than anyone.

Its not just a relevation in the area of our careers - both Daniel and I are growing together in our marriage and in our lives.

It has been tough. But they were plenty of good times too.

Things are looking good so I am going to try to be as optimistic as possible.

On other note, Ive got two tournaments in the next two weeks and a day out at the Rugby 7's (corporate tent!) to look forward to. Its not just the challenge of trying to get there in one piece, it is actually the challenge of getting there without losing sanity or rage.

Dubai is extremely horrendous when it comes to traffic. Comes my luck - I am faced with the peak hour traffic everyday. It takes me an hour to get to work! Without traffic, it is a mere 20 minutes away.

Granted, I've only been doing this for about 3 months - but it is really tiring. It doesn't help that I am very alarmed that I kept dozing off on the wheel. Very dangerous thing to do.

Sigh. I miss Perth.

Traffic there is absolute heaven. When I really think about it, I don't actually fancy the big cities much. I prefer a big town/small city setting. So what if the malls or supermarkets are open till midnight? If you work in the retail area - that means you have to work till midnight!

NOT FOR ME.

Nightlife in Dubai is colourful and plenty to do. But that means shit when you know you have to be awake at 6 bloody morning to go to work. Or that looking for taxis in the late afternoon is absolute hell. Drive your own car? Good luck trying to find a parking space!

Lately, I have been thinking of moving out of Dubai and living in a nearby emirate. Its a lovely place call Ras Al Khaimah. Small town, nice beaches and more of a 'local' feeling to it. I hope the rents there dont go up the way they are in Dubai. I would not mind moving there. There is a nice golf community up there which would be a dream to live in.

Commuting time from RAK to Dubai - 1 hour.

Sigh.

Its funny though, I would not think twice of commuting 1 hour to work in Perth - but somehow over here, it seems ages. Isn't that strange?

I guess all these frustations are also brought up by the fact that golf fees in Dubai now are definitely out of my reach. I can't be bothered paying that much when I am not payed enough to start with! Golf here is definitely catered more towards the rich and wealthy. Such a shame. I am trying to work out to be a member in a golf course in RAK. Hopefully that will go through.

The only light through all this - is actually my job. I am gaining the experience that I needed that will hopefully give me an edge when I get back.

In the meanwhile, I will just have to grunt my way through this Dubai madness.

Daniel thinks that I am not happy. Well - he takes 5 minutes to go to work! We live so close to his work, he can even walk there if he wants to.

New addition to the family

Written by Fiz

Guys, we've got an announcement to make - we have a new addition to our young family!

*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*

Haha. Im not pregnant.

We just adopted the two most beautiful kittens. Introducing Timmy and Chappy to the Errington family. They're both boys roughly about 8 weeks old. They're so tiny but they're so adorable.

They were abandoned by whomsoever - so we like to think that we are giving them a new fresh start in a new home.

I was told that they would take some time to warm up to me and everything. We got them this morning but already after a few hours, they were circling around me and I get to pet them and touch them. They were even playing and scratching on a newly bought scratch post. What a fabulous miracle!

Timmy was the first to make his move and warms up quick to me but Chappy seems to be the more playful one. They have both been through a lot till now and I hate to put them through that again.

We are also extremely broke at the moment. I've spend so much on their litter box, food, carrier and we even got them a really cute scratch post! We still have to pay for their shots and so on and I'm also thinking pet insurance? Sigh. So much for saving some money for our next trip. (We are thinking of Oman...). I'll post pictures on them playing on it soon. You just can't help but grin like a mad idiot watching them play.

This is my first time ever owning my own pet. Daniel is saying that I'm like a new mother and that I worry so much. I can't help it cause I know they've been through hell before this, being abandoned and all.

Timmy is apparently very much a desert cat with its big ears but Chappy is more like an European mix cat.

Introducing...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/Rw_Lpse3JHI/AAAAAAAAAGg/jKwbO2WH8N0/s320/timmy+and+chappy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5120535218519221362" />

Timmy (orange) and Chappy (Grey). He is definitely the more playful kitten and loves to be petted.

Hehe. Ramadhan in Dubai is certainly interesting. I have never seen a mad bunch of drivers itching to go home early at 2-3pm before. (Work hours are shorter from 8am to 3pm in most places). Everywhere I go, Dubai is certainly a city of contradictions.

Very very interesting experiences so far.

Last week, Dan and I decided to take a night out away from Dubai. Its very common for expats in Dubai to take weekends away or nights away from Dubai. Its very settling on the heart to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Traffic here does drive a lot of people mad. I have to face the peak hour jam everytime I head to and back from work and it is definitely straining.

The night away was very nice and definitely something that we plan to do more often. We head off literally to the middle of nowhere and stayed at a very nice resort area with a sandy desert golf course.

Pictures below.

On another story - I just heard that it is official that Dubai actually has the largest shortage of women in the world. Our male population is 67.6% and females are 32.37%. If anything, that gives you an indication of how many male labourers there are in Dubai. Construction business is very very big in Dubai and thats why the official numbers show that males tend to outnumber women by quite a big margin.

Funny enough though, if you were to ask me - Dubai seems to have a large population of married and living together couples as well. I can safely say that 4 out of 5 women that Ive met so far are either married or living with a partner/in a relationship. Same goes for men. I hardly ever met any single men out here. Maybe 1 out of 5? But that just shows you a picture of Dubai lays many contradictions and very much depends on your social environment. I wont elaborate further than that. High chance that if I do - I may sound like a racist bigot.

Another actual fact? Dubai have the highest rate of diabetes. (Based on Guiness Book of Records). If you see the way people live their lifestyle here - you can understand why. Its quite scary. But to say that Dubai is higher than America is quite a scary fact. More because, I think about 30% of the population in Dubai is living below the average wealth.

Contradictions, my friend.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RwfJbM09opI/AAAAAAAAAGI/2Twzsi33aqM/s320/01102007288.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118280970666877586" />

Camels everywhere on the side of the road!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RwfJzs09oqI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/QpgmEFjz2BY/s320/01102007289.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118281391573672610" />

They set up putting holes in the clubhouse. Here is Daniel having a go at it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RwfKK809orI/AAAAAAAAAGY/2hYbOl58zl0/s320/02102007293.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118281791005631154" />

Here is an interesting picture. As we move into Dubai, you can see the skyline across Sheikh Zayed Road. Heard of the Burj Dubai? Currently set to be the tallest building in the world? You can see the difference and how tall that building is. Mind you, its still under construction and is set to be taller than what it is now. Its mind boggling to see how tall that building is compare to all the other skyscrapers in Dubai.

Today not yesterday

Writen by Daniel

Well I thought I better write something in this blog before Fiza chucks a tantrum at me ;-) Well last week we headed out on the bike(my other love of my life)and we went to Hatta fort for breakfast. Fiza myself and four of her friends and 1 of mine who couldnt stay for breakfast as had to get home but came out for a ride anyway. Was great fun and breakfast was delicious as always. On the way back we took a detour and went through the winding mountain roads. Great views but started to get a bit hot as we were pulling back into dubai.

Well its Ramadan now and we have shorter working hours. Any way ill let Fiza explain Ramadan to you, Im just going to enjoy the relaxing time in Dubai.

Just so you know...

Written by Fiz

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RtvClIgxR5I/AAAAAAAAAGA/R00eQJxC5UE/s320/GSXR.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105888545750468498" />

I laughed so so hard at this.

Lots and lots of it

Written by Fiz

Many apologies for the long delay in the posts. Daniel couldnt be bothered to write anything here so you're stucked with me. I have been extremely busy lately with nothing else but golf. Ive played so much golf in the last month, I am deliriously happy. I look forward to a golf game all week.

So far, Ive played at Majlis course in Emirates Golf Club, Dubai Creek Golf Club, Montgomerie Golf Club and Al Hamra Golf Course in Ras Al Khaimah. Before the summer golf, it was Jebel Ali Golf Club and Arabian Ranches Golf Course.

I took pictures in all the golf courses except for the Montgomerie and I wish I did. Its a very nice golf course with luxurious big villas around the course. (some housing about 10 bedrooms!). I will take some pics of it for future posts.

Last weekend, I spend two days playing at Al Hamra GC. The trip to Ras Al Khaimah (another emirate in United Arab Emirates) is about an hour's drive. I went up there on Friday with a bunch of guys and it was, I find, worth the trip. We all had fun on the golf course teaming up on a matchplay stableford format and I played the best game in ages. (2 over gross score).

The next day, I took the trip down there again, this time on my own for the Al Hamra Summer Open. I call it work related but I can't stop smiling throughout my 'work' hours. I can't imagine, after all these years, I am actually driving through the desert in United Arab Emirates to play golf and this is actually work related.

My company co-sponsored the event.

The next few weeks, I'll be busy with Demo Days and more golf games. I look forward to it all. Many have asked whether the heat is a concern, but I don't mind the heat when I am playing golf. But I do have a vengeance for it when I am just walking about. I am weird, that way.

Some more pics:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RtrTuogxR1I/AAAAAAAAAFg/jeT2s_ZyI_c/s320/01092007281.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105625925680187218" />

Pic of the desert drive

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RtrUHIgxR2I/AAAAAAAAAFo/Hg3b3COYCT8/s320/31082007278.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105626346586982242" />

Teeing off in Al Hamra's signature 18th hole

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RtrUZYgxR3I/AAAAAAAAAFw/CULT_gpy1zg/s320/24082007271.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105626660119594866" />

Picturesque Dubai Creek Golf Club. One of the nicest golf resorts Ive had the pleasure of playing. Its right by the Dubai Creek so you get such a nice view of the Creek and Old Dubai.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RtrU14gxR4I/AAAAAAAAAF4/9UcXAL708kI/s320/31082007280.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105627149745866626" />

Theres no such thing as walking in summer golf here. Golf is a luxury sport here and you do tend to appreciate the small details that the golf courses do to make your visit more personal. If you can see it, they even printed out our names on our golf carts. And every few holes or so, you'll see a guy in a cart bringing out wet towels for us to cool down. Excellent service in almost every golf courses Ive been to so far.

Summer golf

Written by Fiz

Summer golf is finally here. Well, for me anyway. Now that I am less-stressed, able to drive and bringing in my own money - means that I can go on to play golf in the weekends. Since its summer, golf courses are generally empty save for the crazy idiots who brave the heat for the love of the game.

I am one of said crazy idiots.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of playing the Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club. It is the same course that host the Dubai Desert Classic. What a great course! There is a reason why the most prestigious tournament in Dubai is held on this course. Its a very challenging course but its highly enjoyable to play. Andrew, one of my playing partner, who has played all the golf courses in Dubai even claimed that this is the best course in Dubai.

I cannot claim that yet as I have yet to play all the other courses.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RsfRLogxRyI/AAAAAAAAAFI/lrOAHUm1Yls/s320/DSC00782.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100275100804007714" />

I have the pleasure of playing with Andrew (right) and Irving (left). Both bloody ozzies. I am friends with Andrew's wife, Sharon (whom I met when I first came here through an expat women group) and Irving is actually Sharon's work boss. It seems everytime I am friends with a girl, I will somehow end up playing golf with her partner/boyfriend/husband. Its quite a treat really. And it happens a lot.

I love playing with these guys because they're equal golf fanatics. We would talk golf all through and compare notes. I played relatively well and my short game is short of brilliant. I think all the playing at Gainsborough and Dublin helped my confidence and touch in chipping and putting. The heat is definitely something that you have to put up with (touching 50+ degrees in peak mid-day) and its very important to keep drinking water throughout. I must have drank like 8 600ML bottles of water in 4 hours with no trips to the bathroom. Shows you how dehyrated you can get out here.

By the way, Andrew is somewhat a magician with the camera cause he takes lovely shots.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RsfTuIgxRzI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/MD-1JGIGNuI/s320/DSC00783.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100277892532750130" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RsfT4IgxR0I/AAAAAAAAAFY/LXjjTCxYYrA/s320/DSC00784.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100278064331441986" />

I can't wait to get my own set of clubs. Didnt even have time for myself to just sit down and blog. Have been busy since. I am still quite exhausted and my bodyclock is trying hard to adjust to the hours.

Everyones been asking how my trip was and I am sorry for the delay of this post. So, here goes:-

What a trip it was! Lovely places. Uk was a hit and Dublin was a partyground. All I do all day is talk about golf and equipments and late in the afternoon, I'll be playing golf with the boys. Free of charge. I think, thats the best bit, really.

It hardly rained at all too. Such is my luck. It was the hottest week in Gainsborough and in Dublin, it only rained on the first day. I must have brought some Dubai sun with me cause no one can explain how all that is possible. Heh. Must say though, I was a bit bummed cause no one was more looking forward to the rain than I am. I miss rain! I have not seen a proper heavy rain in 8 months!

My knowledge about golf equipment has definitely increased and I am enjoying the fact that I am now a qualified club custom fitter. Its not hard really especially since I do have some basic knowledge about golf equipment.

I think I quite enjoyed the fact that I was the only girl at the sales meeting. Someone even told me, uncomfirmed, that I am pretty much the first girl to ever attend a Europe hardware sales meeting. Hehe. Not surprising, a lot of girls tend to do apparels or after sales service in this industry. They are unlikely to be sales reps or distributors.

Basicly, I can't wait for work and the golf season here to pick up again. Im excited and cant wait to get out there and play. Especially since I'll be getting new clubs with the new Ping G10 next month. Trust me, those G10s are just simply awesome :)

I miss Daniel loads when I was away. Its a blessing in disguise to go away for a bit cause you do realise how much you have and what you'll miss ;)

Here are some pics. Unfortunately these are all golf related. Hehe.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RsRMR4gxRvI/AAAAAAAAAEw/7jpEcEbQQp8/s320/10082007255.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099284548201563890" />

One of the nicest par 3s I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Had an awesome birdie and a near hole in one on this hole. Its got a river streaming on the right and hills at the back. Awesome view.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RsRP44gxRxI/AAAAAAAAAFA/BtDUGuMGH20/s320/07082007241.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099288516751345426" />

Sea on one side and hills on the other. Greenery everywhere.

I didnt take a lot of 'human' pictures and I really dont want to bore you on with more pictures of golf holes. Two pictures will do for now.

Woohooo!!

Written by Fiz

Today is a joyous day. Today, I finally, f***ing finally pass my driving test!! It took me 6 months with lots and lots of stress and money but finally this day has come!!

I had such a big grin on my face when she told me I passed. It was really unreal. Most of us who took the test expect to fail as it has become a money-making ruckus.

Not being able to drive was such a bitch. I was so cranky and frustated and I actually failed the first time! The reason? When I changed lanes, it was too fast therefore putting me as a hazardous driver. wtf? I was under the speed limit of 80, roughly around 70 and that was deemed 'dangerous'.

O wells, this second examiner is less strict than the first and did not test me as much as the first and I passed!

That's Dubai for ya...

My first week at work has been so great. I really think this new job would be a great start for my career. It sounds promising and it really combines my love for golf and sales.

Tomorrow, I'm off to UK and Ireland. I am so excited!! I have not pack a single thing yet but I will get on with it soon.

Tonight however, I am off to celebrate my newfound independance and early birthday celebrations!

Danny Bhoy Stand Up at the Cracker Comedy Festival Sydney 2007

Written by Fiz

If there is one thing that I sorely miss - is Ozzie humour. Nothing beats it in this world. I get a lot of Pommy humour here and top that with a bit of local Dubai flavour but nothing beats observations of Ozzies in Oz.

We get a lot of comedians coming here, well not so much now in summer, but its just not the same. Their observation humour is all over the place or maybe its because I have yet to found one that really cracks me up?

But one of my favourite all time comedian is this bloke - Danny Bhoy. Hes scottish but he spends a lot of time touring Oz and I always love his humour bits on Ozzies. Hes simply brilliant and after I watched the clip above, I just remembered how much I love his jokes and the thought of all those late nights watching the parliamentary setting on ABC totally cracks me up.

Not all of us have Foxtel, my dear.

Why on earth, you may ask, was I watching those parliamentary settings? Well, its either that, or some more stupid infomercials and repeats on games and shows that Ive seen. He was so spot on!

Just watch the clip and I know you ozzies will just crack up watching it and I'll bet, you will in turn watch those ABC parlimentary settings just for a good laugh.

6 months wedding anniversary

Written by Fiz

Tomorrow is our 6 months wedding anniversary. Whew! 6 months!

Since today is our day off together, we decided to celebrate our anniversary a day earlier. The day started with a 18 holes golf game at Jebel Ali Golf Club. (What do you expect when someone asks me what I want to do to celebrate an occasion?) It was so much fun. We had our video cam and we took a lot of video shots.

Daniel even dared me to a longest drive bet. Loser buys lunch at the clubhouse. Tsk, tsk, silly boy, although he did hit a good shot (gasp!) on the fairway, I still manage to beat him on the drive. Mind you, we both teed off from the same spot. Heh.

For dinner, we spend a lovely time at Kiku, apparently one of the best Japanese restaurants in Dubai. The restaurant is very nice, top notch decor and nice food. I am seriously thinking of having my birthday dinner there. They have private rooms and a lovely teppanyaki area.

Here are some pics:-

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RpPLDWemk6I/AAAAAAAAAEQ/4Pby_7Wuvrw/s320/dan+at+kiku.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085631662665405346" />

Dan at dinner

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RpPI5Wemk2I/AAAAAAAAADw/BZS5vRopYNs/s320/us+at+kiku.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085629291843457890" />

Us at Kiku

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RpPLuWemk7I/AAAAAAAAAEY/ZnPe-jW--tg/s320/kiku.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085632401399780274" />

Background pic of the restaurant

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RpPL-Wemk8I/AAAAAAAAAEg/bYqNFkjVqtY/s320/teppanyaki.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085632676277687234" />

Gorgeous teppanyaki area

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RpPKwmemk5I/AAAAAAAAAEI/Io7DFyYiYeI/s320/me+at+kiku.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085631340542858130" />

Oh, hello.

Golf in Jebel Ali Golf Club

Written by Fiz

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/Roe5smemkyI/AAAAAAAAADQ/DYUoEN4pJS4/s320/jebel+ali+gc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082234880405181218" />

A friend was kind enough to invite me for a 9 holes game at Jebel Ali Golf Club. This golf club, some 45 minutes away from Dubai, is a really nice place in the middle of nowhere. It only has 9 holes but the hospitality in this place is amazing.

I hardly ever say no to a golf invite and I was very excited to try out this course. It is only a 9 holes course but its a pleasant retreat among the desert AND construction sand.

A signature animal in this course is the peacock. Unfortunately, I refuse to be one of those 'people' who tracks down a peacock on the course and takes a picture of it! :p

My only wish is that we had played 18 holes ( repeat the course twice).

The course is also attached to a hotel and a marina. Below is a picture of all the privately owned boats docked at the marina. (Most of the owners of the boats here are said to be very rich and very well known in Dubai).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/Roe7JGemkzI/AAAAAAAAADY/5nux4IwlXgY/s320/jebel+ali+marina.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082236469543080754" />

First movie stub in Dubai

Written by Fiz

Yesterday, Daniel and I went to see Fantastic 4 - The rise of the silver surfer. After 5 months here, it was our first movie experience in a Dubai cinema. The movie was awesome and the setting was nice too. Ive never seen a place so packed on a Tuesday night!

Even with Perth's cheap Tuesday movie deals, you can't beat the crowd that comes in here on a regular weekday. I can't imagine what the crowd would be like on a weekend.

Guess with the hot humid brawling weather outside, everyone packs inside for entertainment.

Here is our first movie stub in Dubai. (tacky, I know.) Its 30dhs for an adult ticket, roughly equivalent to $AUD10. A bit cheaper huh?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RoIz92emkxI/AAAAAAAAADI/tSLbqByRWxg/s320/moviestub.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080680467316249362" />

Movie Stub in Cinestar cinemas. Due to the discriminative laws here, I have to take driving lessons and pass a ridiculous driving test. Now, in any other well-developed countries, I am fairly confident that I will pass a driving test. But it seems over here, they tend to fail a person for no apparent reason. Its all a money making ruckus!

When I first took my driving lesson at 17 - I was never stressed being instructed on the road. Everything was fairly easy and makes common sense. Now, I am receiving tips to pass the test that doesnt make any sense at all. Sigh, its actually stressing taking driving lessons. All because I know I have to be almost perfect to pass the test.

I really feel shit. I don't want to be here. I want to be far away, in a secluded island and be served and entertained all day.

Being unemployed, even though it is temporary - sucks big time. I feel so so lonely and so so bored.

I can't wait till August, where I will whisk away to UK and Ireland (for work purposes). Even though it is work related- I am going to take it as though it is a holiday. I feel like I need a good holiday away from this madness. Play some golf, meet new people and enjoy not having to sweat in the humidity of Dubai's summer.

Can't wait.

Hooters anyone?

Written by Fiz

Muahahahahahah...I am laughing so hard. One minute, I am so happy, I feel like hugging everyone, next minute, I'm fucking depressed, I feel like punching every sod there is on earth.

She doesnt seem surprised by my relevation.

She responded further by saying that there are 3 main stresses in life. One, is getting married/being a newlywed. Which I am going through. Two, moving to a new place. (Where I don't have the support and familiarity). Which I am going through. Third, starting a new job. Which I am going through. (for the second time...)

To top it off, I am currently unemployed. (Job wont start till mid-late July).

Frankly, I am surprised I didnt acknowledged that I was depressed earlier.

That was basicly the gist of the conversation. But everytime I feel very low or thinking that I AM GOING CRAZY - I take great comfort in replaying that conversation in my mind. I have to take in the big picture as whatever that I am going through is mainly 'annoyances', not 'problems'.

I take great comfort in the little things to make all these transitions a little bit easier. Easier said than done. Things are working out again and my hope is restored.

I feel like I need to write this down as a reminder of how things are. Feelings are crushed easily here so I am threading on careful waters.

A man complimented me on my swing at the range today. Luckily he spoke at the end, cause the whole staring and watching can be quite annoying. I was hitting the golf balls much nicer today and I am so anxious to be playing on a full 18 holes golf course. Unlikely to happen anytime soon as a game is not cheap.

Until I start my new job in July, some things have to be put on hold.

Homesick

Written by Fiz

Feeling terribly terribly homesick. Is all this really worth it? The gamble for my career in exchange for short term happiness?

I wish I have some money stashed aside. I would love to spend it on a quick trip home.

I want that stability again. I want that familarity. I want my friends around me. The line was absolutely perfect, the ball dropped less than 2 feet before the hole and rolled in. It was such a nice hit and to actually watch the ball dissapear right before my eyes was like a dream come true.

I was actually playing alone and was pretty much the only one playing on that course at that time. But luckily, the greenkeepers saw the hole in one too! Mario, one of the greenkeepers was actually watching me play the shot and immediately when the ball went in, he was so excited and started shouting 'hole in one!' and clapped his hands in appreciation. I was quite surprised but glad that someone else saw the shot too cause I was almost in dismay that no one witnessed my first ever hole in one.

And he was so nice that he came up to me after that and called the course marshall to make sure that my hole in one is appreciated. We signed the scorecard and they said that they will send me a hole in one certificate. How awesome! I did not expect to be appreciated as it is only a par 3 course.

The par 3 course was on the Dubai Creek Golf Club. Here is a picture of the course and the clubhouse (with its infamous sails).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/Rmo7JGsz7dI/AAAAAAAAADA/ojYDo5ZUd0k/s320/08062007186.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073932957789711826" />

Dubai is baffling at times

Written by Fiz

I really do think Dubai is the most 'baffling' city in the world. I have heard of cases where a man was sentenced to a month in jail for showing the middle finger, stupidly at the police officers, men and women were sentenced to couple of months in jail including lashes for adultery or pre-marital sex.

But, why oh why, can someone please explain to me why Dubai, it seems, have the most number of hookers/prostitutes on the streets and bars that I have ever seen? They don't even hide it. You can see girls everywhere on the streets - with their short skirts and heavy makeup. You can see girls in bars just waiting to pounce on any guy walking in.

Why are those girls not arrested? More importantly, why are the guys who seek for these girls not arrested?

And trust me, teenagers in this place know that they can get away with seeking prostitution. I have heard teenage boys talking about prostitution places and 'people they know'.

Middle East can be a joke. They talk about 'bad influences' of the 'West' a lot but I think they should just look at their backyards and get a reality check. And for ***** sake, do not put religion into the picture again.

Ranting season

Written by Fiz

I have just officially resigned from my current position.

I am happy that I left and what's more - my work colleagues are saying good on ya for leaving. That workplace is a freaking zoo.

So, I am back to being unemployed again.

On another issue, if there is one thing that I know and learned for the last few months is to never procastinate on any household chores!

If I don't clean the dishes for just one day, it all piles up. If I don't wash and iron the clothes, it will be left untouched for ages. If I don't top up on shopping groceries, I'll end up slogging the items all by myself walking all the way home. Like today, I was carrying 8 plastic bags and 6 large water bottles on my own for about 800m walk.

Now, all my friends know how strong I am but even with this, I struggle like mad and I was sweating as though I just did a 2km run. I had to stop every 200m and put all the items down. I had lots of stares. Ergh.

I am dying to speak to someone in the same situation as I am. Its so frustating.

But to make it worse, I can't complain anymore since I will be a housewife again till I get another job. So Im back to doing cleaning, cooking and washing full time. I swear cleaning is twice what it used to be in Oz - maybe it has something to do with us being in the middle of the freaking desert? Theres sand and dust everywhere. And we live in an apartment. I can't freaking imagine leaving in a villa in Arabian Ranches for instance - that would be hell to clean.

Why can't men share the household chores? Its almost impossible to get them to clean.

I spoke to this single guy the other day and I mentioned the whole cleaning thing, and he just nod his head and agreed. He said that he doesn't clean his dishes untill several days later and doesn't bother with cleaning in general. The only time he cleans is when he has visitors coming.

Does that remind you of someone?

Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!

Reaching the edge

Written by Fiz

I am reaching the edge of my patience regarding Dubai's redtape laws. Just please offer me help.

Exciting daunting prospects

Written by Fiz

Next week I will know for sure where my career is headed. I am pushing for a final word regarding by job description and role. An opportunity just opened up in the company and I am eager to take it.

If I do not succeed- or if the GM has other ideas - I'm leaving for other prospects. Enough is enough. In this land, money talks for me. Nothing else.

Other than that exciting but daunting prospect of probably not holding a job as of next week - I am eager for this weekend's break. I am getting bags under my eyes. Its not my fault really for not sleeping earlier. One could not sleep earlier because of all the cleaning, power naps and gym workout that I have to do before I go to sleep. (I take power naps when I come home cause I am so tired after work and I need the energy to clean and etc)

Argh! All the cleaning!! I have been approached by two housemaids in the building on whether I want to hire help - and I had to force everything I have to say no.

Really, I don't mind cleaning if it is my mess -but two people's (him more than me)mess? Its like I am holding two jobs - an office job and a cleaning job. Guys really do not get bothered by 'dirt' as much as us girls. Its so annoying. This is why I'm not even considering kids. Can you imagine the mess? And all the bloody cleaning?

Tomorrow is Daniel's birthday. I can't wait to give his birthday present tomorrow :)

If anything, you guys have to push him to update this blog. I was quite pissed off that our riding companions were late but once we got riding - it was a thrill to be riding on a bike. I never rode a bike before so it was kinda cool to ride on a back of one.

The thrill of the speed is nice especially with the cool breeze before the sun rises. It wasn't that nice once the sun sets in. I can now see why bikers would ride early in the morning before the sun rises as the roads are empty and the view is magnificient.

I can't wait to further explore Hatta as the mountains are really nice. No where near that of New Zealand's but it is a nice change from the sands of desert in the city.

The ride was roughly one and a half hours ride from the city.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RkYJ27WRVLI/AAAAAAAAAC4/vMsyarCZh84/s320/usinhatta.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063745670273389746" />

Thats us with Dan's bike - and you can see the mountains at the back

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Ive found a hairdressing salon that I like! What a relief. I put off cutting my hair for so long cause I didn't want just anyone to cut it.

So today, I gather the courage and based on a recommendation - I went to Patsi Collins in Garhoud. Fantastic service and to top it off since my cut was delayed due to a client before me so they actually offered a complimentary manicure. I was in heaven!

I took the offer of course and the girl that did my nails was fab. My nails look really nice now and I am happy with the haircut. The owner even offered me a discount for the cut since I had to wait.

The place was very nice, the service is excellent and I am definitely coming back for my haircuts and manicure. I cannot believe how cheap the manicures are here - so much more than Perth and the quality is good.

And the other thing thats getting me excited is that this is my last week for my training with all departments. After this, I hope to get a more concrete idea on which department I'll be based in. I have a rough idea on what it is and I am quite happy with the progress so far.

My boss has assured me that in roughly 4 months (thats when my probation ends) - I will have a revised position and salary. A condition that I will firmly press for is for a revised salary :)

Motorbike Madness

Written by Fiz

Daniel just bought a motorbike. I, the wife, actually <strike> willingly </strike> allowed him to buy his own bike.

In DUBAI. Not Australia - DUBAI.

Have you seen the way drivers here drive?

We are getting our wills and insurance done before he rides.

But it has been his dream to buy this particular bike (600cc) so Im just being the supportive partner about this. It is much cheaper to buy it here than back in Perth.

I even got myself a helmet for the ride. Next week or so, I'll get some protective clothes to go with it so I can go for a bike ride as well.

Personally, I would prefer to cruise around the desert/city in a sports car - but oh wells. Dreams for another time.

He can have his bike and I am just gonna lease for a comfortable small car to drive in.

Life in Dubai

Written by Fiz

Our apartment is finally fully furnished. Its so exciting to see all our furnitures in place and especially with the curtains- once again our privacy is restored. The only things missing are that we have not set up any internet connection nor have we set up our own transportation.

Politics in Dubai still baffles me. It really is a hub of nationalities here. Expats make up about 85% of the population, so it is actually a norm to see more expats than local Arabs on the streets.

Ive been reading blogs of Arab women and learning more about the Arab culture. Very interesting insight. Certainly explains a lot with how things work in Middle East.

I find myself to be more stereotypical and is some way, more racist. Daniel is going through the same thing. Racism and stereotypism is very common here. Its almost as if I have to change my insight once I step back on Australian soil. Naivety here is as deadly as poison. Unfortunately, when you're in Rome...

Its not something Im proud of to say loudly. But it is how things work here. It certainly explains why people keep asking me for my race, nationality and religion. At first- I must say, I was offended to be asked such personal questions from strangers. After a while, I realised it is how they work out how to deal with you. And it is not just business, it covers area of social as well.

And trust me- when I tell them my personal details- they are baffled even more. Most do not know what to do when faced with contradicting statements.

Certain nationalities would not deal with others. Nor would they socialise with them. I find this very offending.

But yet, there are no mention of gang rivals or race wars here. If something like this shows up in other countries - there are certain to be race wars on the streets.

But I find this all a very eye opening experience. Im sure Daniel feels the same way.

A week of relief

Written by Fiz

Things have never been so good. I must say, the move to the new apartment was such a timely good move. (Both of us were getting 'tired' of living in a tight hotel apartment room)

Daniel now has a nice big kitchen to cook in. I have my own space and privacy. I must say, I do not fancy the idea of a 'maid' or 'help' to come in and clean. The horror stories of 'help' in this country is enough to put me off. Its not worth the stress.

Surely, the two of us can cope with the cleaning and cooking of a 1 bedroom apartment!!

We had some nightmares with our couches earlier. But luckily that was all sorted in a week. We now have all the essential furnitures in place. Two rugs and the TV bench will come in today and our curtains will be up on Wednesday.

Yay!!!

Things are really good now :)

Finally sank in

Written by Fiz

Last night, it actually sank in that I have my own place and my own job. The next couple months would be exciting as I finalised my visa, my driving license, my job description and my other furnitures.

Then, I could finally say that I am settling in.

Sometimes, its hard to believe that I am actually in Dubai.

P/s: I love that our apartment has a male and female only gym. Its wicked. Less people and more privacy. I almost screamed in excitement that the gym is equipped with a Life Fitness treadmill. I love Life Fitness treadmills - by far the best, in my experience.

The only downfall is that there is not a lot of heavier weights in the women's gym. I'm gonna have to 'borrow' some heavier weights from the men's gym.

Adjusting

Written by Fiz

Things are hectic and chaos.

I am mentally exhausted everytime I come home from work. And the day doesn't stop there.

We are both trying to adjust to each other with the different working hours. I must say, it hasn't been easy. We both work different hours in the day and we hardly see each other except during our off days. (if it aligns).

I'm trying to absorb and learn all the new things at work, so I can't stop thinking about golf products and apparels.

I am cooking my own food. Enough said. I really do hate cooking.

The laws and procedures in Dubai is getting more and more ridiculous by the minute. They may be advanced in their thinking of a new bigger Dubai, but they have a long way to go in installing common sense into their laws.

I am still ripped of my independance to drive my own car.

Last weekend, we took taxis to move around and the taxi drivers - they are really dishonest. I don't care if it is generalizing anymore, I can't stand being ripped off. I know the area of Dubai quite well so I know when Im being taken for an extra km ride. (The next time that happens, Im calling in to officially complain).

We are moving to our new apartment (officially) this week. Furnitures are coming in as of this Thursday night. I hope I get through the weekend without stressing too much. I just know there is going to be some sort of screw up.

I am this close to slapping every men on the road. What is it with men and their full on stare on women? GET A LIFE! Or rather..GET LAID YOU BASTARDS! (Even those who drive..will actually TURN their heads back whilst driving...argh!!!!).

And people keep asking me how life is in Dubai.

You have your answer for now.

First week at work

Written by Fiz

I survived my first week at work. It has been really interesting. Im learning so much, not just on the side of distribution and retail in golf, but also on how things work around here in Dubai.

Makes me wish that Im back in Australia.

People keep complaining that things dont work. Especially when it comes to shipping and post, Dubai has a LONG way to go. For god's sake, we don't even have personal house mailing addresses. Its all PO Boxes. And things tend to get lost.

But apart from that wake up call, it has been good. Spend the whole lot of today, staring and working out the codes in the system. Thank goodness I know some of the products, but I still have a lot more to go. Theres so much more products when you work in a distributing company, its nowhere near what its like working in a pro shop.

In the office alone, 3 different languages are widely spoken. And I only know one of them!

Ive been walking to work as well. It takes me roughly 20 minutes of walk to work. And another 20 minutes back. I figure, walking would actually do me good (while the weather is pleasant) as I feel like my fitness is slowly dwindling at an alarming rate. Plus, I don't have a car! So yeah, that makes a difference.

I cant believe how ridiculous the driving laws are. Its making me boil with anger. My residence visa is still in process so that doesn't help either. Nothing can be done.

Losing the privillege to drive is quite depressing. I dont feel as independant - if that makes sense. I hate the taxi drivers here with a vengence. They are rude and possibly a rude shock to tourists here.

To tell you the truth, I don't quite know what to make of my first week at work. The training that Im receiving at work is almost impossible to think of back in Perth. Not for someone my age that is. They always want someone with more experience. And the competition is so fierce.

So, I am really happy to be working in my desired industry and towards my career goal, but are the little disruptions going to cause further anguish?

P/s: I think I need to see the dentist. I can't hold it off any longer. My left side aches everytime I wake up and eat. The thing is, I don't think I have the MONEY for it. Sigh.

Getting the whole lot together

Written by Fiz

Today, the papers for our new apartment are finalised. It will be our first place together. I am having a nightmare of trying to budget our furnitures for our new apartment.

Some things I would rather buy new but others I could not be bothered. But what I hate the most is the dip into our savings.

O wells. Nobody said starting up was easy. I am definitely shipping these furnitures back to Australia when we move back. I aint spending that much and having to do the whole lot again back in Perth.

I really would like to sort all of these before I start work on Sunday. So tomorrow, Im dragging Daniel (kicking and grunting) to the Mall of Emirates to buy our furnitures. I know what Im getting as Ive been scouting around and taking pictures of the ones that I like.

A friend of mine emailed me this picture - and it is beautiful! Its the Oz Day Fireworks at the Hillarys Marina (right in my backyard) and more than anything, it makes me feel homesick. (Can you spot the comet in the picture? And what is with the lightning on the right? Is this picture for real?)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZOpycD12zwQ/RfmHWSmKiII/AAAAAAAAACk/WQrDmJ8yulA/s320/ozdayinhillarys.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042210074836764802" />

Clean and dirty cars

Written by Fiz (again)

Let's face it, despite what everyone would say about Dubai, it is what it is - a city in the middle of the freakin desert. Sand is everywhere and top that with construction dust - whew - that's a lot of sand.

The cars and villas are covered with sands. No wonder people here hire part time maids! Just to help them with the cleaning. Im praying the fact that I am in an apartment cuts the cleaning in half compared to villas. Villas are nice and all, but I could not be bothered with the extra space and cleaning maintenance. Ive got a life, people.

So, you can imagine cleaning is big here. After 3 weeks of driving my car, it was TIME to clean it. I could see handprints and sand everywhere. So, I took it down to a petrol station. OMG.

I saw the MANUAL WASH section and I thought, hmmm great. I can clean my own car here. Perhaps that could save me money and Im so used to cleaning my own car anyway. But no.... there are people cleaning the car for you in the MANUAL WASH section. Come on! There is an automatic wash section as well. Much quicker too. Will definitely use that one next time.

Im not used to being 'helped' this much. We don't even fill up our own petrol. There are people doing that for us.

But I must say, the cleaning was quite good. They fully washed, wiped and vacumed the car for us. The inside of my car was also detailed and smelled lemony fresh.

I am impressed. Totally did not expect it. The level of service was quite good too.

So now, I can drive my car around with pride. It is clean!

Dubai Festival City

Written by Fiz

When I first heard about Dubai Festival City and what the whole project is about, I was already impressed. But to actually see the first phase of the project completed is something else.

Took a trip down to the Dubai Festival Mall today. I was really impressed with the mall design. So much so, it didnt even occur to me to take some pictures. boo! This mall is huge and also house a massive IKEA store (triple the size of the Perth pathetic IKEA store), a gold market, a huge ass supermarket and many others.

The IKEA store is something else. Its like a hub for people to come in, take a look at some lovely furnitures and hang out at its restaurant. This place was huge and more so, I was actually impressed with their furnitures and room designs. Usually, the thing with me and IKEA is that Im not impressed at all with their designs or the practicality of it all.

Due to the massive workout of exploring the IKEA and Marks and Spencer store, I didnt have much energy at all to explore the rest of the mall. (My legendary 'male' fitness when it comes to shopping takes gear). But from what I saw, I like. Very open spaces, lots of light and splendid architectural designs.

I have to come back when all the stores are open and less construction nightmare on the roads around the area.

Dubai is really a massive construction city. Everything seems to be under construction. I took a long way back, exploring the sights behind the mall, and even those areas are all under construction.

If any of you want to see Dubai, I would probably recommend coming here at least 2 years from now. Then again, whos to say that the construction will stop with this city?

The first most bizarre thing Ive seen in Dubai

Written by Fiz

I kid you not, I had to take a double take when I saw this. I was in the pharmacy the other day and I saw this poster that said 'Firming Gel for Hymen for Women'. I almost dropped to the floor in disbelief.

O.M.G! What? WHY? What? NO!!

And to add to it, it actually said on the poster that it is supposed to INDUCE PLEASURE AND DESIRE. Is this suppose to be their selling point? WHY would ANYONE subject themselves to this?

Sex, women and middle east culture is absolutely bizarre. I have to know, who in their right mind would buy this product?

And more than anything, WHY would a WOMAN subject herself to THIS?

I am absolutely baffled. Its a management trainee position to start with for the first six months. The money aint that great but its gleaming with opportunities and a chance to work in the golf industry here.

So, goodbye teaching and hello retail golf!

O good gawd, the next 6 months is gonna be hell. If I succeed in my probation, they will offer me a position in management of retail golf. How awesome will that be?

Im prepared to slog it out and I did say that I would have to anyway for at least the first 5 years of my career. The posh cars and luxury will have to wait till Im old and wrinkly.

Observation 1 of Dubai: I have never seen so many 4 wheel drives and absolute luxury cars in one place. The 4 Wheel Drives are a pain in the ass on the roads and you can be certain 80% of the drivers are expats with little 4 wheel driving experience. (Most likely carrying a tot at the back). Manuevering around these huge asses makes you wish that you are driving a tank on the road. Especially when it comes to parking in tight places.

Observation 2 of Dubai: I was wondering why is it that there seem to be a lot more housewives here even though these women are all qualified professionals? I reckon the reason is the working conditions around here. Sure, it is tax free but it does depend a whole lot on your race, gender, experience and chance. There are no industry standards so a whole lot of your salary package depends on your appearance and expertise. Ive spoken to several women who were interested in working but after a look at their job descriptions and conditions, they politely declined. Some are not even worth the slog.

Observation 3 of Dubai: I have never received such personal and caring service from a medical institution untill I had a visit at Emirates Hospital. Absolute props to the lady who was serving me as she was wonderful. A lot of medical practitioners that I have come in contact with are usually sour, skeptical and snobs. They don't make you comfortable going for a visit. But this lady was exceptional. I was genuinely surprised and pleased.

Good customer service is a rarity here. Is it the barrier of language? Or a clash of cultures? Or simply a lack of genuine hospitality? Surely a smile crosses all barriers.

Im here and not that lazy

Written by Dan

Well maybe i am a bit lazy but hey you all know me, so i thought i better get off my lazy butt and put something in here well before Fiza has a cow or something :-)

we are having so much fun here, i have the best job in the world and we are seeing so much stuff. (Dan is a lazy ass who takes ages to write or update pictures on this blog...)

Yesterday, we both went on a desert safari and dinner trip. We left the hotel about 3pm and came back about 10pm. What a trip it was. The desert is gorgeous!! Its about an hour drive away from the city and the landscape changes dramatically. Even the sand is of a different colour. (Reddish desert sand is so different from city yellow sand).

We started with a 'rollercoaster' 4 wheel drive through the sand dunes. Highly recommended for adrenalin and shrieks of fun. We stopped at various places for photos and sightseeing. We even stopped to look at the sunset over the desert. Very nice.

After that, we had a sumptuous BBQ dinner right in the middle of nowhere. It was nicely set up, with a very Arabian feel. We rode a camel, smoked some sheesha (sheesha is Arab's version of cigar), watched a belly dancer danced, had henna painted on my arm and met some great people from all over. Met a couple of Irish girls who were here to visit their friend, who is a teacher at my school!! What a small world!!

Here are some pictures taken from my camera phone. There are other great pictures from our camera/video, but thats Daniel's department to upload it here..so bug him for that.

Us against the backdrop below

Second Day of Teaching

Written by Fiz

Ive been teaching for two days now. Man, its great to be out there and I do love relief teaching. Its flexible and I don't have to plan any lessons for the next day. Hurrah!!

The kids are amazing. And I love that I'm able to drive to work...its a feeling of independance to be able to drive on my own. It was shit scary the first time, I had to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road. And there are a lot of careless crazy drivers here. I have to be on alert at all times.

But wow, just being able to work and drive is such an amazing turn of feelings. I feel like myself again. Being jobless was absolutely no fun. Im such a career woman.

Ive also been quite active keeping in touch with expat women that Ive met. Its good to have friends to talk to. They are awesome. Its great to talk to someone about my observations, experiences and hearing what they have to say. I would love to meet some locals, but unfortunately, I don't see that happening much. It is quite hard. Not to mention the barrier that exist.

Dubai is really a class society. But what struck me the most is despite that people still get along pretty well. There are no mention of wars or gang/race rivals. Everyone sort of accepted the situation and moved on with their lives. The class system sometimes bugs me, because it is what it is...discrimination. But I guess like everyone else, I just accept it and make the most of it.

I am somewhat glad as well that I don't have to deal with the taxi drivers as much as I had to before. What a great relief!

I've got a job!!

Written by Fiz

Ive got a job!! Though I really do doubt that anyone really comes down to this site.

You know I love to give personal updates through email, but I hate repeating myself again and again.

Here are some pictures that I took when we went to Wild Wadi Waterpark last Tuesday. We started the day with my informal meeting with a golf course and then we were off to Wild Wadi Waterpark. This place is so cool and so much bigger than Adventure World. Lots of slides and water everywhere. And it is right next to the 7 star Burj Al- Arab Hotel. The very infamous hotel.

Update on my job hunt - still looking. Ive been told again and again how slow things work around here so it can be frustating. The fact that Daniel got his job in the first week doesn't help the frustation.

Three of the job offers so far did not work out. I had to turn down one, cause it wasn't what I was looking for. The second one, did not turn out for me. It was a 'possible' position and unfortunately they could not create the position at the moment. Instead, it would be a couple of months or after summer. The third one, unfortunately I did not get the job. Can u believe that in the 2 weeks Ive been here, Ive been to 8 interviews/meetings for a job?

So, currently I'm in an interview process with another golf course and tomorrow I am meeting an international school for prospects of casual/relief teaching. (why not? I have the degree, and the pay is good). If all works well, casual teaching might be good for me since it doesnt tie me down to a contract, which means that I am free to job hunt my dream job in a golf course and I earn some money.

Let me explain, most of the full time jobs in Dubai are tied down to a contract. Most are 2 years or more. You can't job hop either, like we do in Australia because the employer can ban you from working in UAE for 6 months if you violate your job contract. Sometimes, you require a no-objection letter from your employer if you wish to change your job.

Ive met some expat women here. We do coffee morning, lunches and dinner. I really feel like a housewife at the moment. It is so surreal. Met a couple of Ozzies too so that was great. Some of us are saying how weird it is to not be working while our husbands do! We are doing all the cooking, cleaning and house duties! and yes- I have been cooking!! Alone!! Daniel is not around much to show me how to cook so I pretty much just wing it. And I've been cooking some delicious chicken lately. We just bought a rice cooker today, so I am eager to cook my own rice tomorrow.

Our First Ever Entry. Hello Dubai!

Written by Fiz

First off, Daniel is the happiest guy in Dubai at the moment. He just landed a dream job as the Bar Manager for Aussie Legends Bar and Grill in Rydges Hotel Dubai. I can't escape the irony of it all. The pay is excellent although it is a 6 day a week job. Which is actually a common working condition around here.

Im absolutely thrilled for him. If you happen to be in Dubai, do stop by the Aussie Legends Bar and Grill at Rydges and say hello to him.

Meanwhile, Ive been a nervous wreck waiting for my job results. Ive been to 4 interviews with the same company and have heard nothing yet. Untill today! No, I didnt get the job yet, they now want me to meet the Human Resource Manager for another interview tomorrow. Im keeping my fingers crossed, this is definitely a job that I was looking for..and to get it...would be a dream come true.

5 interviews!! Man, its either they're not sure about me, or I am somewhat shortlisted from a long list of candidates. It is a terrific job position so I can understand if there are other worthy qualified candidates vying for the position.

By the way, we finally made our way to Emirates Mall today. It is definitely my favourite mall of all time. Its got heaps of stores, anything that you want, you'll definitely get it here. I love how the mall was set up, its gorgeous. Its huge too. And of course, it has Ski Dubai in it.

Daniel saw and played snow for the first time today. He's like a little kid just before we went in. I was thrilled as well. I love the snow. And we both decided to take a beginner's lesson on snowboarding! It was awesome. We both got the hang of the balance and etc by the end of the lesson. And we are definitely going back (though the prices are quite steep to go back every week!) and enhance our skills so we could finally go down the slopes.

It is much better than I thought it would be. The slope is big enough for certain amount of people. I can imagine this place would be really really crowded during summer so I definitely advise going there during 'non-peak' hours.

Snowboarding is definitely cooler than skiing. Ive tried skiing before and getting up from those skis are the worst thing. But snowboarding is easier once you get the trick to it. And we definitely need some snow gloves the next time we head in there. Ive forgotten how much gloves help when you keep falling down and touching the icy snow. My hands were red and cold by the end of the lesson.

Since we couldnt bring our camera in there during our lesson, they took some pictures of us going down the beginner's slopes. Wish you could see the pictures! They're awesome. One picture of me going fast down the slopes and another of Dan as well. So we had that printed and we are proudly showing it off as our first picture snowboarding in Ski Dubai.

It is unreal to think that we actually played with snow in the middle of the desert. But thats Dubai for ya...

The mall is gorgeous. I know which stores to go now, to get decent size of tops and shirts. It just takes some detective work.

So the fact that Daniel is starting work as of tomorrow is actually a huge relief for the both of us. At least one of us is earning income and lessen our worries about dipping further into our savings.

As for me, I just want that job!! Wish me luck for tomorrow...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://danfiz.blogspot.com/2007/02/our-first-ever-entry-hello-dubai.html' title='Our First Ever Entry.
